FilmAcademy360 is a program of Spectrum360, a non-profit organization that serves children, adolescents, young adults and adults on the autism spectrum and with behavioral and related disabilities. Our mission is to provide the highest quality educational and therapeutic programs for individuals with learning, language and social/emotional challenges to achieve their maximum potential as responsible adults in society; recognize and value the individuals’ unique abilities, learning styles and differences; and serve as a leader in promoting innovative educational programs. FilmAcademy360 is a unique hands-on educational environment designed to help diverse learners explore and learn through filmmaking, video editing, game creation and graphic arts. FilmAcademy360 is an after-hours, weekend and summer program open to all individuals in the community with autism spectrum disorder and related behavioral disabilities. Our motto is “unique minds welcome.” Students must be age 14 and up. Student productions include those made for individual self-expression, acting to teach social communication skills, preparation for higher education, employment, and providing professional services to commercial clients. Our teaching and production environment is dynamic, social and team-oriented. There’s a role for every participant. We provide a learning and working environment that is inclusive and supportive, and where students can feel safe and accepted. While we offer education and experience in high-level career skills and socialization, students enter FilmAcademy360 with all levels of proficiency, and can access classes that are adapted to various areas of interest and initial ability. A continuum of coursework builds technical production skills as well as social skills. We offer 5 levels of learning, including a career path for older students, each with a range of course options. The program sequence is carefully designed so students can enjoy a successful experience. Courses are sequential so that students across the spectrum can participate in the program. The curriculum allows students to have a basic introduction focusing on building social skills, or move through the technical aspects of video production, as skills and interests dictate. Courses are offered during the school day for students enrolled in Academy360 Upper School, and are also offered to members of the general community after school and on Saturdays. Our Summer Film Academy, open to all individuals in the community, offers these classes and more.
