Summit Camp and Travel

About

Since 1968, Summit Camp in the Pocono Mountains is an ACA Accredited sleepaway camp that focuses on helping children and adolescents with social and emotional challenges to feel accepted, find peers that share in their experiences and interests- making friendships for life, and to grow in terms of independence, tolerance, and flexibility. Summit’s program of a traditional camp experience that is staffed with supportive, knowledgeable counselors, directors, and specialists allows our kids and teens to focus on having fun and feeling safe. They hardly realize how hard they’re working! When young people are having fun and engaged in a community of equality and acceptance, they are able to demonstrate resiliency and tolerate “let downs” – small failures or conflicts- with greater ease. This, in turn, makes it more likely for a youth to try a small risk they might otherwise resist for fear of failure or rejection- trying the climbing wall, asking a peer to dance, getting up and singing at a show. At camp, self-esteem is bolstered and campers feel confident that they will be supported by the community. For the Summit camper, who has struggled to ‘fit in’ and have such a strong showing of support outside of the home, this can be truly magical. Each summer session we welcome upwards of 250 children and teens from ages 8-19 years, both new and returning to the program, to come and enjoy ‘the Magic on the Hill’. Fall, Spring, and early Summer Open Houses allow parents to visit with their prospective campers, tour the grounds and meet the directors. In the meantime, call us any time or visit our website- we would be delighted to hear from you.

Joe Camper

We heard great things about Summit Camp and Travel from our son's school but we were reluctant to send him away to sleepaway camp. It didn't seem like something he could handle due to his anxiety. So we went to one of their open houses and he told us that he wanted to give it a try. We sent him and waited breathlessly for his first email which basically said something like, "I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am having a great time. See you later." We died laughing and were so relieved and thrilled for him. We later heard that the staff referred to him as "Joe Camper" he loved it so much.
